Central Virginia in the Civil War with historian Rick Britton

At first glance, Central Virginia—where Thomas Jefferson completely dominates the history—appears to be a Civil War black hole, a place where nothing happened. With this lecture series, Rick Britton hopes to revise that perception.

April 10 - “Saving Stonewall’s Bacon”
On Sunday, June 8, 1862—while Maj. Gen. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson’s army was encamped at Port Republic—an aggressive Union cavalry force stormed into town threatening to capture his wagon train and General Jackson himself. One Southern unit stood in the way of this disaster—the brand-spanking-new Charlottesville Artillery.

Rick Britton is an award-winning historian whose Civil War pieces have appeared in numerous national magazines, including America’s Civil War, Command Magazine, Military History Quarterly, and Civil War Times. Along with his writing, Rick illustrates maps for history books and conducts Civil War battlefield tours.
