Monday, March 27, 2023 | 11:00am-3:00pm

Mondays  11:00 am-3:00 pm

In addition to the luck and skill associated with other card games, acting skills are important in poker—good bluffers can win even with a bad hand. The concentration required to calculate the odds of improving one’s hand while keeping a poker face and interpreting other players’ expressions and body language provides excellent mental stimulation. In our animated games, you risk losing pride, not money! Some knowledge of poker is required.

No registration is necessary but if interested in playing, contact program leaders Norris Woodzell.

Note: Poker will only be meeting on Mondays for the summer. We will resume Wednesdays in the Fall.

Tai Chi Evenings

Tai Chi Evenings

Wednesday, March 29, 2023 | 5:30pm-6:30pm

Wednesdays 5:30-6:30

Stimulate your immune system, lower your blood pressure, decrease your stress and improve your balance: That’s not a bad scorecard for one hour’s worth of exercise each day! If you can walk, you can play. Visitors are welcome to try it out! Taught by Bryan McKenzie. Also on Thursdays and Fridays 8:30-9:30am.

Background The Center has offered Tai Ji (an alternate spelling of Tai Chi) for 14 years. The teaching method allows participants to learn health aspects of the discipline, its connection to Chinese medical theory, meditation techniques for relaxation and to bolster the immune system, and even self-defense techniques. The system is based on the Three Emperors style of martial arts taught by Wang Zhenhua, a former coach at Beijing University. The Center’s program was initiated by Mr. Wang’s student, John Alton, Charlottesville resident and someone recognized by the Chinese government as an expert in Chinese health practices. Lei Xilai, an instructor who came to the states from the Beijing area, taught advanced classes at The Center and introduced new forms to the class. The current instructor, Bryan McKenzie, has taught for the past 12 years. Bryan is a student of Mr. Lei and Mr. Alton. Bryan leads the TaiJi group with a clear mind, with firm hands and a warm heart, and above all with gentle words. He has a great sense of humor and no pretense at all.

About the Exercise

The exercise is simple -- in a series of movements based on a Taoist martial art, participants slowly relearn how to balance, purposefully shifting weight from side to side and then increasing the difficulty of the movements. The slow movements not only redefine balance, but also provide a workout similar to the old Charles Atlas "dynamic tension" exercises for muscle development. Participants currently range in age from 50 to 94 and allowances are made for personal stamina, strength, medical history, and ability. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy-going; participants running late for class are welcome to join in whenever they arrive.

Wisdom In Aging 2023

Wisdom In Aging 2023

Tuesday, April 11, 2023 | 5:00pm-6:00pm

April 11-May 9, 5:00-6:00 pm (5-week series)

Using the inquiry method, facilitator June Heintz will lead participants through a series of questions for self-reflection and response. Participants will use active listening as individuals share their discoveries of strategies that increase acceptance of all that comes with aging. Free and Open to All.

Learning goals:  Through skillful questioning, the facilitator will engage participants in revealing to self and others the strategies and life skills that have helped us through each phase of what comes as life goes on.  Through this process, each participant will feel more confident in our ability to meet whatever occurs with equanimity.  We will learn from each other and therefore gain collective wisdom.

Bio on Instructor: As an art educator, first a K-6 art teacher, then a docent at the Baltimore Museum of Art and now at the Fralin Art Museum of UVA, I have been trained in the inquiry method and now use it in sessions at the Fralin, Looking Inward, in which participants share observations of a painting or sculpture with accessory information provided by my background research.

"The Patagonia Bones" Documentary

Tuesday, April 11, 2023 | 5:00pm-6:30pm

April 11 5:00-6:30 pm

Free

In 2015 it was 150 years since Welsh settlers arrived in Patagonia. Their descendants still live in southern Argentina. But not all the settlers survived - recently discovered bones may be those of the first Welsh woman to die there in 1865. This film tells us how a set of human remains may close the circle on a fascinating story that spans half the globe.

Join us to screen the documentary and enjoy these true events with special guest and the director himself - Ricardo Preve. Enjoy the film and a brief Q&A session to learn about world geography, world history, and migrations.

Brief bio: Ricardo Preve was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 24, 1957. He studied in Argentina, Italy and the US. He received undergraduate and graduate degrees in agronomy and forestry from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, USA. After nearly 20 years as a manager of natural resource companies, he began a filmmaking career in 2001. His production companies are Ricardo Preve Films LLC in the US and Esto del Cine SRL in Argentina. See www.prevefilms.com

Golf will return on Monday May, 1 2023!

The Spring kick-off golf meeting wil be held on Monday, April 3 at 10 am at The Center.

This group is open to all senior golfers (men & women) from beginner to advanced levels playing at Meadowcreek Golf Course every Monday, May through October. We welcome folks who have just learned the game and want to learn more while having fun; however, this is not an “instructional” league. It is assumed that everyone knows the basics of golf as well as the etiquette and rules. We play Ready Golf, loosely organized into “Equally Capable Foursomes” and our tee times begin at 7:30 am. Walk, ride, play the back nine or go for the full eighteen! Come enjoy meeting new players or old friends while taking in the fresh air and the beautiful Virginia scenery. We try to match players of similar abilities, and no one takes the game too seriously. To speed up play and for the benefits of all players, please review the rules of Ready Golf before participating.  A $20 season fee applies, plus Meadowbrook green fees each week.  If you love the game of golf and would like to join like-minded folks, you are invited!  For more information, please contact Denny Berry, Senior Golf President, at 202-468-8441 or dennymberry@gmail.com
