Mary Alice Hostetter’s debut memoir, Plain: A Memoir of Mennonite Girlhood, tells the story of her journey to define an authentic self amid a rigid religious upbringing as one of twelve children in a Mennonite farm family. She knows the Mennonites consider themselves “a people apart,” but as an adolescent she wants nothing more than to fit in. She leaves the community, only to come to accept that she is a lesbian, putting her again on the outside. Published as part of the University of Wisconsin Press’ Living Out series, this is a story of one young woman finding and accepting her truth.

LGBTQ Americans beginning in the 1940s and ending in 1995 faced explicit and pervasive restrictions on their ability to obtain a security clearance and serve our country as a Federal employee. Andy Dunn, who spent 29 years working at the Central Intelligence Agency and retired in late 2021 as the most senior openly gay official since the Agency's founding in 1947, will discuss the history of this discrimination, how the restrictions were challenged and weakened--and eliminated--over six decades, and his own experiences at CIA in the final days of and decades following the lifting of the ban.
