Central Virginia in the Civil War with historian Rick Britton

At first glance, Central Virginia—where Thomas Jefferson completely dominates the history—appears to be a Civil War black hole, a place where nothing happened. With this lecture series, Rick Britton hopes to revise that perception.

April 24 - “The Surrender of U.Va. & Charlottesville”
On March 3, 1865, as Union Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan’s cavalry army approached Charlottesville, the citizens frantically hid their valuables. Sheridan’s cavalrymen—because of the scorched-earth warfare they’d waged in the Shenandoah—were no less terrifying than the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Would they torch Charlottesville and the University of Virginia?

Rick Britton is an award-winning historian whose Civil War pieces have appeared in numerous national magazines, including America’s Civil War, Command Magazine, Military History Quarterly, and Civil War Times. Along with his writing, Rick illustrates maps for history books and conducts Civil War battlefield tours.
