May 26 - Latin America, the United States, the World, Yesterday and Today
What in the World is Going On? Latin America, the United States, the World, Yesterday and Today. When he was a kid growing up in Bogotá, Colombia, Herbvert "Tico" Braun was a mature thinker. Or so he thought. Growing older, his convictions kept crumbling. While teaching Latin American history at UVA for more than forty years, he was forever trying to catch up with what was going on, and is trying still, even to this day, as the relationship between Latin America and the United States has kept getting closer and closer. Herbert Braun joined the UVA History Department in 1983. He has written articles and essays in Spanish and English, and three books on Colombia, thie first on a riot, another a family memoir of the kidnapping of his American brother-in-law by Marxist guerrillas, and the lsat on courtesy and acrimony in the nation's public culture. In 2015, he was named the University's Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Professor. Now he is (just) Professor Emeritus.
