This talk illuminates the political career of James T.S. Taylor, the United States Colored Troops veteran who represented Albemarle County in Virginia's 1867-68 Constitutional Convention and who fought to modernize and democratize Virginia. Varon puts Taylor's activism in the context of Southern Unionists' struggle against the unreconstructed rebels and "Lost Cause" propaganda.
