Beginner Watercolor

Next session: Tuesday, July 8, 2025 | 9:30am-12:30pm
Details:
Tuesdays, July 8-August 26, 9:30 am-12:30 pm
This 8 week course is for anyone new to watercolor painting. Since drawing is the foundation of visual art, basic drawing skills will be included in each class along with watercolor techniques. Vivian, the instructor, has over 25 years of experience teaching art to students in Grades K–8 and currently teaches middle school art online. This course is based on a curriculum created and taught at the Center for many years by Linda Abbey. A supply fee of $25 is due to the instructor at the first session. (see below)

Required materials:
- 9” x 12” sketchbook, 50 sheets
- Arches 140 lb. Cold-pressed paper, 8 sheets 11” x 15” [This paper comes in large sheets, 22” x 30.” We’ll make a joint order after the first class. For that class, I’ll have pieces of the dimension you’ll need for $2/sheet. If you already have this paper, please bring two sheets to the first class.]
- Drawing tools, your choice of pencils, micron pens, and/or charcoal
- Erasers [I recommend kneaded and firm.]
- White artist’s tape
- Paints: Cerulean blue, Ultramarine blue, Cadmium yellow light, Yellow ochre, Cadmium red light, Alizarin crimson, Burnt sienna, Burnt umber, Hooker’s green light
- Mixing palette with at least 12 wells and a large mixing area
- Brushes: round [32 or 36, 10, 6], flat [3/4”], rigger [#2 or #3]
- Spray bottle and a sponge
- Compass [geometric, inexpensive] and a 15” ruler [cork-backed metal rulers are the easiest to work with]
- Paper towels
- Painting boards—I’ll have large painting boards for you to borrow, but if you have your own, please feel free to bring them.
Please choose the brands you prefer, but avoid the cheapest paint [e.g., Artist’s Loft] because it doesn’t contain the amount of pigment you’ll need. Your work is worthy of the respect implied by quality materials!
The $25 fee will pay for the mats for our end-of-class exhibit and the illustration board you'll need for your final painting.
Members only.
