Central Virginia in the Civil War with historian Rick Britton
At first glance, Central Virginia—where Thomas Jefferson completely dominates the history—appears to be a Civil War black hole, a place where nothing happened. With this lecture series, Rick Britton hopes to revise that perception.
April 3 - “Jefferson Country in the Civil War” - Discover how the war erupted across Albemarle County; how the community supported the war effort; and how two U.Va. student companies participated in an extralegal expedition. Also: We’ll not forget our area’s African American soldiers—the United States Colored Troops (or USCTs)—and the U.Va. men who fought for the Union.
Rick Britton is an award-winning historian whose Civil War pieces have appeared in numerous national magazines, including America’s Civil War, Command Magazine, Military History Quarterly, and Civil War Times. Along with his writing, Rick illustrates maps for history books and conducts Civil War battlefield tours.
