Drawing with Colored Pencils
Next session: Thursday, April 9, 2026 | 10:00am-12:00pm
Details:
Thursdays, April 9 - 30, 10:00 am-12:00 pm
Colored pencils are one of the most convenient mediums to work in: they require very little in the way of extra materials; they don’t take up much storage space; and they aren’t very expensive. Drawing with colored pencils allows you to create images both delicate and rich, depending on the effects you’re striving for. In this class, you’ll learn basic drawing, shading and color blending techniques.
Required Materials:
- 9” x 12” and/or 11” x 14” sketch pad, smooth paper, at least 70 lb. wt.
- Good quality pencil sharpener with attached chamber to catch the shavings
- Blending tools
- Berol Prismacolor colored pencils [as many colors as you can afford]
- Erasers: kneaded, pink pearl, Staedtler
- Optional, but my favorite pencils: Lyra color giants, set of 12 or 18 colors. These pencils are available from DickBlick, the Charlottesville Waldorf School [on Rio Rd. across from Pen Park], and Mercurius-usa.com. They are 6-sided, so very comfortable to hold; the colors are brilliant; the pencils are large so they don’t easily break and they last for a very long time.
