Aging Gracefully: Living Independently (Part 1) Many seniors want to remain independent in their home as they grow old. What does that mean?  Where is “home” and how will you take care of yourself as your body and perhaps your mind begin to fail?  If you need help, how will you pay for that?

Tuesday, September 20
Aging Gracefully (Part 2) Assisted Living and Continuing Care Retirement Communities.
Sometimes, remaining completely independent isn’t possible. Assisted Living, with or without memory care is one answer. Moving into a “continuing” care retirement community (CCRC) is another option. If you decide this is a better option for you, how will you pay for it?

Tuesday, October 18
Aging Gracefully (Part 3): End of Life – Nursing Care and Hospice
After an illness or accident and a stay in the hospital, you might need nursing care. The goal of that is rehabilitation and a return to your normal home. Sometimes independent living is not possible and extensive care is required. What about Hospice? There’s a place for that, and it might not be where you think it is.

Wednesday, August 17, 2022 | 8:30am-9:30am

Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, 8:30am-9:30am

Stimulate your immune system, lower your blood pressure, decrease your stress and improve your balance: That’s not a bad scorecard for one hour’s worth of exercise each day! If you can walk, you can play.

About the Exercise The exercise is simple -- in a series of movements based on a Taoist martial art, participants slowly relearn how to balance, purposefully shifting weight from side to side and then increasing the difficulty of the movements. The slow movements not only redefine balance, but also provide a workout similar to the old Charles Atlas "dynamic tension" exercises for muscle development. Participants currently range in age from 50 to 94 and allowances are made for personal stamina, strength, medical history, and ability. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy-going; participants running late for class are welcome to join in whenever they arrive.

Tai Chi Mornings - ONLINE

Wednesday, August 17, 2022 | 8:30am-9:30am

Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays 8:30am-9:30am

Stimulate your immune system, lower your blood pressure, decrease your stress and improve your balance: That’s not a bad scorecard for one hour’s worth of exercise each day! If you can walk, you can play. Visitors are welcome to try it out! Taught by Bryan McKenzie. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 8:45am-9:45am - beginners should start on a Monday.

Background The Center has offered Tai Ji (an alternate spelling of Tai Chi) for 14 years. The teaching method allows participants to learn health aspects of the discipline, its connection to Chinese medical theory, meditation techniques for relaxation and to bolster the immune system, and even self-defense techniques. The system is based on the Three Emperors style of martial arts taught by Wang Zhenhua, a former coach at Beijing University. The Center’s program was initiated by Mr. Wang’s student, John Alton, Charlottesville resident and someone recognized by the Chinese government as an expert in Chinese health practices. Lei Xilai, an instructor who came to the states from the Beijing area, taught advanced classes at The Center and introduced new forms to the class. The current instructor, Bryan McKenzie, has taught for the past 12 years. Bryan is a student of Mr. Lei and Mr. Alton. Bryan leads the TaiJi group with a clear mind, with firm hands and a warm heart, and above all with gentle words. He has a great sense of humor and no pretense at all.

About the Exercise The exercise is simple -- in a series of movements based on a Taoist martial art, participants slowly relearn how to balance, purposefully shifting weight from side to side and then increasing the difficulty of the movements. Hiking-Wednesday (Offsite)

Hiking-Wednesday (Offsite)

Wednesday, August 17, 2022 | 9:00am-3:00pm

Wednesdays, 9:00am-3:00pm
We hike Mondays and Wednesdays all year long, in many different areas, including around Charlottesville, Shenandoah National Park, and along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The hikes can
range in length from 5-10 miles with a total elevation gain from 500 to 2500 feet. Our hikes are rated from moderate to strenuous. This is based on the length of the hike, the amount of total elevation gain, and the terrain, which can often include steep ascents/ descents on rocky, uneven ground and stream crossings over slippery rocks. Our hikes are typically not suited for beginner hikers.

Please dress appropriately for hiking in the mountains, including rain gear and hiking shoes or boots. Trekking poles are highly recommended and traction devices for boots may be necessary in winter. Bring lunch, snacks, 2-3 liters of water, a hat and wear layers. Bug spray and sunscreen are a must in summer. Hikes are smoke free, pets are not allowed, and we follow the “leave no trace” rule.

In this Post pandemic time we are still having sign ups for hikes. We take 14 hikers plus the leader on each hike. We hope that all participants are vaccinated. If not, we ask that you follow
social distancing and mask requirements, We have a hiker email google group. The hike leaders send out emails about the hikes on Fridays at 5:00 pm for the Monday hikes, and Sundays at 5:00 pm for the Wednesday hikes. Sign up is on a first come, first serve basis. We do not carpool from The Center to the trailheads. Hikers are encouraged to set up carpools with other
hikers if possible. The hike leader sends out the names of the hikers on each hike. We meet at the trailheads at 9:30 am and 9:00 am on Wednesdays from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Directions to the trailheads are included in the emails.

If you are hiking with us for the first time, please contact the hike leader directly, to discuss your hiking experience and to ensure your readiness and suitability for the hike. We want to ensure the safety of all our hikers. We encourage a spirit of camaraderie and welcome new hikers to try our group out. Please keep in mind that there are inherent risks in hiking as in any vigorous activity. We always take care of each other, but ultimately you are responsible for your own safety.

Ageless Grace - ONLINE

Wednesday, August 17, 2022 | 1:00pm-2:00pm

Mondays and Wednesdays, 1:00pm-2:00pm

A new and fun way to move that includes a chair (seated dancing; standing is optional)! great music from 40's big bands to today’s music, creativity and a sense of humor! A mind-body program designed by fitness specialists to stimulate the whole body-head to toe- as you listen, recall, move and sing along with hit tunes, promoting a sense of well-being and joy.

What makes this program more interesting and enriching is that Ageless Grace® is both a body and brain exercise. Ageless Grace® is based on the science of neuroplasticity: the ability of the brain and nervous system to change its structure and function, and to continue to change it throughout our lives, to keep us youthful and vital.

Each of the 21 exercise tools emphasizes a different technique, such as joint mobility, spinal flexibility, right-left brain coordination, kinesthetic learning, cognitive function, systemic health, balance, self-esteem, confidence and playfulness.

Song Writing with Jim

Song Writing with Jim

Wednesday, August 17, 2022 | 2:00pm-3:00pm

Wednesdays, 4 weeks, August 10th-31st

This Class is at Full Capacity

Think you’re too old to write a song? Think again. Bob Dylan is still going strong at 80. John Prine was past 70 when he released his final album. Like those two, you have a lifetime of stories to tell. Your experience gives you an edge!

Bringing your stories to life in song can do a world of good for you. Songwriting is a great brain exercise, and it can soothe your soul in so many ways. The final product is a treasure you can share with friends and loved ones — a piece of you that lives on forever.

Don’t know how to play an instrument? No worries. Jim Richardson will supply the guitar accompaniment and help you craft the rhythm, rhyme and melody.

Objectives:

  1. Learn how songs are formed.
  2. Write at least one song as a class.
  3. Perform the songs during one of Jim’s concerts in the Atrium or at another special event.
  4. Record the performances on phone videos and voice memos.

Prime Members: Free, Standard Members: $20, Guests: $32

About the Instructor:

Jim has been playing guitar and singing since he was 12. Around age 60, he started taking it more seriously and started performing in bands and as a solo act around Charlottesville. He has enjoyed playing a weekly gig at The Center for the better part of a year. His band JRB has played Thursdays around five to three times

He started writing his own songs about three years ago. He took Mike Clem’s songwriting class at The Front Porch twice. He also self-studied the songwriting craft by reading many books on the subject.

This group is open to all senior golfers (men & women) from beginner to advanced levels playing at Meadowcreek Golf Course every Monday, May through October. We welcome folks who have just learned the game and want to learn more while having fun; however, this is not an “instructional” league. It is assumed that everyone knows the basics of golf as well as the etiquette and rules. We play Ready Golf, loosely organized into “Equally Capable Foursomes” and our tee times begin at 7:30 am. Walk, ride, play the back nine or go for the full eighteen! Come enjoy meeting new players or old friends while taking in the fresh air and the beautiful Virginia scenery. We try to match players of similar abilities, and no one takes the game too seriously. To speed up play and for the benefits of all players, please review the rules of Ready Golf before participating.  A $20 season fee applies, plus Meadowbrook green fees each week.  If you love the game of golf and would like to join like-minded folks, you are invited!  For more information, please contact Denny Berry, Senior Golf President, at 202-468-8441 or dennymberry@gmail.com

Hiking-Monday (Offsite)

Hiking-Monday (Offsite)

Monday, August 22, 2022 | 9:00am-3:00pm

Mondays, 9:00am-3:00pm
We hike Mondays and Wednesdays all year long, in many different areas, including around Charlottesville, Shenandoah National Park, and along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The hikes can range in length from 5-10 miles with a total elevation gain from 500 to 2500 feet. Our hikes are rated from moderate to strenuous. This is based on the length of the hike, the amount of total elevation gain, and the terrain, which can often include steep ascents/ descents on rocky, uneven ground and stream crossings over slippery rocks. Our hikes are typically not not suited for beginner hikers.

If not, we ask that you follow social distancing and mask requirements, We have a hiker email google group. The hike leaders send out emails about the hikes on Fridays at 5:00 pm for the Monday hikes, and Sundays at 5:00 pm for the Wednesday hikes. Sign up is on a first come, first serve basis. We do not carpool from The Center to the trailheads. Hikers are encouraged to set up carpools with other hikers if possible.

Since we are an associated program with The Center, hikers must be Center members in good standing.

Please keep in mind that there are inherent risks in hiking as in any vigorous activity. We always take care of each other, but ultimately you are responsible for your own safety.
If you would like to be put on our email list or have further questions please contact AnneColgate

Mondays  11:00am-3:00pm

In addition to the luck and skill associated with other card games, acting skills are important in poker—good bluffers can win even with a bad hand. In our animated games, you risk losing pride, not money! Some knowledge of poker is required.

Wisdom in Aging

Wisdom in Aging

Monday, August 22, 2022 | 4:00pm-5:00pm

Mondays August 8-29 and September 12, 4:00-5:00pm

Using the inquiry method, June Heintz will lead participants through a 5 part series of questions for self-reflection and response.  Participants will use active listening as individuals share their discoveries of strategies that increase acceptance of all that comes with aging. Open to all.

Through skillful questioning, the facilitator will engage participants in revealing to self and others the strategies and life skills that have helped us through each phase of what comes as life goes on. Through this process, each participant will feel more confident in our ability to meet whatever occurs with equanimity.  We will learn from each other and therefore gain collective wisdom.

Brief Bio on Instructor: As an art educator, first a K-6 art teacher, then a docent at the Baltimore Museum of Art and now at the Fralin Art Museum of UVA, I have been trained in the inquiry method and now use it in sessions at the Fralin, Looking Inward, in which participants share observations of a painting or sculpture with accessory information provided by my background research.

Open to all.

Jazz Jam Session

Jazz Jam Session

Thursday, September 1, 2022 | 6:00pm-8:00pm

Meets the first Thursday of every month

A jazz jam session is a relatively informal musical event, in which musicians, including both instrumentalists and vocalists, who have not previously rehearsed their performance together, meet to play commonly known standard jazz tunes. The arrangements are created spontaneously by the musicians during performance. There is also a strong focus on individual improvised solos. Musicians may choose to participate in only one song or all songs during the evening.

The styles of jazz music performed during a single jam session can range widely – from early Dixieland jazz from the 1920’s, to big band swing of the 1930’s to 1940’s, popular Broadway tunes, Latin beats, Bebop and Cool jazz of the 1950’s to 1960’s and contemporary jazz from the 1970’s through to today. The jazz jam experience is a fun and educational experience for both participants and the audience. Participants get the chance to practice their jazz improvising skills in front of a live audience and meet other musicians in the local jazz community. Musicians of all abilities and ages from beginners to professionals are welcome to join in. The audience will likely hear some familiar jazz tunes but will also certainly discover new songs performed that they have not heard before.

Steve Brecker will head up this program. He has a music degree from University of Miami and has played jazz trumpet for 50+ years in a variety of music groups. He is a member of the Charlottesville based Sentimental Journey Big Band and the Charlottesville (Municipal) Band.

Free and open to all. Not a musician? Just come and listen!

"We believe that our group members and our programs provide help and information about a condition that can be difficult and embarrassing,” says group leader John Watterson. Essential tremor is a neurological condition that causes shaking of the head, hands, and voice. An estimated 10 million people in the United States have essential tremor (ET). While not life-threatening, ET is a serious and progressive condition that can significantly affect a person’s quality of life—socially, professionally, and emotionally. People with ET often have difficulty with everyday activities such as getting dressed, eating, drinking, speaking or writing. Of 20-plus different kinds of tremor, essential tremor (ET) is the most common. Also known as familial tremor, benign essential tremor or hereditary tremor, ET is a neurological condition often confused with Parkinson’s disease and dystopia. Due to misguided beliefs and lack of awareness, many people with this condition never seek medical care though most would benefit from treatment. This group is both educational and supportive, and free. We meet on the second Thursday of each month, from 4:00-5:00pm.

International Essential Tremor Foundation (IETF) The IETF funds research to find the cause of essential tremor (ET) that leads to treatments and a cure, increases awareness, and provides educational materials, tools, and support for healthcare providers, the public, and those affected by ET. History

Noting the lack of a chalk pastel society in Virginia, in August 2001, Dick Carpenter invited Charlottesville regional artists in that media to meet at Michaels Arts and Crafts store at Barracks Road shopping center. Many were members of the Central Virginia Watercolor Guild, which had long admitted pastel as a water compatible “mixed” medium, but not as a feature of the CVWG activities. The result of the meeting was, quite purposefully, an “un-organization” with NO membership requirements, bylaws, officers, dues, agendas, minutes, quorum, name-tags, committees, etc. Just like-minded people enjoying meeting to exchange ideas and experiences about pastel materials and techniques, constructive criticism, and “show and tell.” The format is a mutual critique -- an examination, not fault-finding. Suggestions for overcoming problems are a part of critiquing. The choice of subject and style of a painting are not topics of critique. Some elements of Critique: 1. Overall Composition - Division of space. 2. Shapes and values 3. Form –shadows-placement of each of the elements 4. Perspective- Illusion of depth 5. Color harmony 6. Paths for the viewer’s eye 7. Center of interest - 8. Principles of Design. Assuring that there is a “message”. All attending artists are active producers, serious about their work, open to criticism, willing to present “work-in-progress," and constructive in their comments and suggestions. Although pastels are the featured media, other problem-paintings may be introduced.

August 9 Meeting
Join William S. Connery as he presents Rebel Raiders on the High Seas
In the 1850s, Stephen R. Mallory was Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Naval Affairs. When his state of Florida left the Union in early 1861, he joined the Confederacy and was appointed Secretary of the Navy. Because no one else cared that much about naval policy, Mallory was able to shape naval doctrine. After viewing the disparity between the shipbuilding and other manufacturing facilities of the Confederacy and those of the Union, he set forth a fourfold naval plan:
·        Send out commerce raiders to destroy the enemy’s mercantile marine.
·        Build ironclad vessels in Southern shipyards for defensive purposes.
·        Obtain by purchase or construction abroad armored ships capable of fighting on the seas.
·        Employ new weapons and techniques of warfare.
The talk focuses on Mallory’s three most successful commerce raiders: the CSS Florida, Alabama and Shenandoah.

In 2012, Mr. Connery was awarded the prestigious Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal, from the Fairfax Chapter of the UDC, for his History Press book Civil War Northern Virginia 1861. His other book, Mosby’s Raids in Civil War Northern Virginia, deals with the Gray Ghost of the Confederacy, and his amazing life before, during, and after the War! He is a member of the Company of Military Historians and a frequently requested speaker in the Washington DC metro region.

Effective Strategies for Caregivers

Monday, September 19, 2022 | 9:00am-11:00am

Mondays, September 19–October 24, 9:00–11:00 am (6 weeks)

The Effective Strategies Program for Caregivers (ESP-C) is an evidence-informed group intervention for dementia caregivers that is being developed at UVA Health by Shannon Reilly, PhD, Carol Manning, PhD, and Ishan Williams, PhD. This project is being funded by the Virginia Alzheimer's Disease Center and the UVA Brain Institute through the VADC Transformative Aging and Neurodegeneration Pilot Grant.

The purpose of this program is to support primary caregivers of individuals who have been diagnosed with dementia. Program goals include providing caregivers with education about memory loss and dementia, emotional support, and evidence-based tools to address dementia-related challenges and to identify resources. The program involves personalized collaboration to develop strategies to navigate the joys and challenges of caregiving while promoting wellbeing for both the caregivers and their family member or friend with dementia. The program will provide care for the care recipient during the caregiver program.

Shannon E. Reilly, PhD, has a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Virginia. She is currently a second-year postdoctoral fellow in Clinical Neuropsychology at UVA Health in the Department of Neurology and was a Virginia Alzheimer’s Disease Center (VADC) postdoctoral scholar this past year. She works at UVA Health’s Memory and Aging Care Clinic (MACC), primarily conducting neuropsychological evaluations and clinical interventions with individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia of various etiologies, as well as their families. Dr. Reilly’s research focuses on dementia caregiver science and risk and protective factors for neurodegenerative conditions. In September 2022, she will become an assistant professor in UVA Health’s Department of Neurology and will continue her clinical and research work with individuals with dementia, their caregivers, and their families.
