Tai Chi Mornings (ONLINE)

Tai Chi Mornings (ONLINE)

Wednesday, June 23, 2021 | 8:30-9:30am

Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays 8:30am-9:30am

Stimulate your immune system, lower your blood pressure, decrease your stress and improve your balance: That’s not a bad scorecard for one hour’s worth of exercise each day! If you can walk, you can play. Visitors are welcome to try it out! Taught by Bryan McKenzie. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 8:45am-9:45am - beginners should start on a Monday.

Background The Center has offered Tai Ji (an alternate spelling of Tai Chi) for 14 years. The teaching method allows participants to learn health aspects of the discipline, its connection to Chinese medical theory, meditation techniques for relaxation and to bolster the immune system, and even self-defense techniques. The system is based on the Three Emperors style of martial arts taught by Wang Zhenhua, a former coach at Beijing University. The Center’s program was initiated by Mr. Wang’s student, John Alton, Charlottesville resident and someone recognized by the Chinese government as an expert in Chinese health practices. Lei Xilai, an instructor who came to the states from the Beijing area, taught advanced classes at The Center and introduced new forms to the class. The current instructor, Bryan McKenzie, has taught for the past 12 years. Bryan is a student of Mr. Lei and Mr. Alton. Bryan leads the TaiJi group with a clear mind, with firm hands and a warm heart, and above all with gentle words. He has a great sense of humor and no pretense at all.

About the Exercise The exercise is simple -- in a series of movements based on a Taoist martial art, participants slowly relearn how to balance, purposefully shifting weight from side to side and then increasing the difficulty of the movements. The slow movements not only redefine balance, but also provide a workout similar to the old Charles Atlas "dynamic tension" exercises for muscle development. Participants currently range in age from 50 to 94 and allowances are made for personal stamina, strength, medical history, and ability. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy-going; participants running late for class are welcome to join in whenever they arrive.

Hiking-Wednesday (Offsite)

Hiking-Wednesday (Offsite)

Wednesday, June 23, 2021 | 9:00-3:00pm

Wednesdays, 9:00am-3:00pm
We hike Mondays and Wednesdays all year long, in many different areas, including around Charlottesville, Shenandoah National Park, and along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The hikes can
range in length from 5-10 miles with a total elevation gain from 500 to 2500 feet. Our hikes are rated from moderate to strenuous. This is based on the length of the hike, the amount of total
elevation gain, and the terrain, which can often include steep ascents/ descents on rocky, uneven ground and stream crossings over slippery rocks. Our hikes are typically not suited for
beginner hikers.

Please dress appropriately for hiking in the mountains, including rain gear and hiking shoes or boots. Trekking poles are highly recommended and traction devices for boots may be necessary
in winter. Bring lunch, snacks, 2-3 liters of water, a hat and wear layers. Bug spray and sunscreen are a must in summer. Hikes are smoke free, pets are not allowed, and we follow the
“leave no trace” rule.

In this Post pandemic time we are still having sign ups for hikes. We take 14 hikers plus the leader on each hike. We hope that all participants are vaccinated. If not, we ask that you follow
social distancing and mask requirements, We have a hiker email google group. The hike leaders send out emails about the hikes on Fridays at 5:00 pm for the Monday hikes, and Sundays at
5:00 pm for the Wednesday hikes. Sign up is on a first come, first serve basis. We do not carpool from The Center to the trailheads. Hikers are encouraged to set up carpools with other
hikers if possible. The hike leader sends out the names of the hikers on each hike. We meet at the trailheads at 9:30 am and 9:00 am on Wednesdays from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Directions to the trailheads are included in the emails.

If you are hiking with us for the first time, please contact the hike leader directly, to discuss your hiking experience and to ensure your readiness and suitability for the hike. We want to ensure
the safety of all our hikers. We encourage a spirit of camaraderie and welcome new hikers to try our group out. Since we are an associated program with The Center, hikers must be Center members in good standing.

Please keep in mind that there are inherent risks in hiking as in any vigorous activity. We always take care of each other, but ultimately you are responsible for your own safety.
If you would like to be put on our email list or have further questions please contact Anne Colgate

We all look forward to meeting you and thanks again for your interest.

Capturing Landscape and Wildlife Photographs with an Aesthetic Difference (ONLINE)

Capturing Landscape and Wildlife Photographs with an Aesthetic Difference (ONLINE)

Wednesday, June 23, 2021 | 10:00-12:00pm

This series has started.  Registration is now closed.

Six Wednesdays from  June 16-July 21

This six-week online photography class will help you learn and apply aesthetic decisions during the process of shooting photographs. These decisions will help you achieve more dramatic, dynamic and interesting photographs. Technical decisions, such as proper exposure, sharp focus and white balance, are important and are the areas of concentration for most photography instruction. This class, however, will concentrate on artistic qualities and principles that can make the difference between just technically good photographs versus visually strong and interesting images that attract the viewer. These qualities include such important principles as composition, quality of light, format, angle of view, tonality, contrast, use of color versus black and white, and timing. Lecture time during the class will focus on these aesthetics with images of the instructor and those from your weekly shooting assignments that will be presented and discussed by the full class (Participation limited to 12-15 persons).

Join Ben and other photography enthusiasts to learn the differences between technical and aesthetic photography decisions, to recognize the opportunities to apply artistic principles to your photographs and to capture images that reflect the important decisions you make during the process of shooting and processing your images.

Mondays and Wednesdays, 11:00am-3:00pm

In addition to the luck and skill associated with other card games, acting skills are important in poker—good bluffers can win even with a bad hand. The concentration required to calculate the odds of improving one’s hand while keeping a poker face and interpreting other players’ expressions and body language provides excellent mental stimulation. In our animated games, you risk losing pride, not money! Some knowledge of poker is required.

Hiking-Monday (Offsite)

Hiking-Monday (Offsite)

Monday, June 28, 2021 | 9:00-3:00pm

Mondays, 9:00am-3:00pm

If you would like to be put on our email list or have further questions please contact AnneColgate

In this year long course we use Conversational Spanish in 7 Days  by Shirley Baldwin and Sarah Boas since it focuses on the most common, everyday situations you’ll encounter in Spanish-speaking countries.  Everything is explained in clear, concise English so if you have to miss a class, you can easily keep up with what we are doing in class.  We are meeting on line every week, and cover about a lesson a month:  during September-December we work with learning the present tense of regular verbs, in January we learn how to use object pronouns, and then in February add irregular verbs, in March stem-changing verbs, and in April reflexive verbs as we talk about daily activities.  In May we turn to a past tense, the present perfect, and then in June look forward, to the future tense.  Finally in July and August we end our year’s study of Spanish by working with the two simple past tenses.

If you are looking for a basic course in Spanish, and can commit to spending at least two to three hours a week (ideally 20-30 minutes a day!) studying Spanish, then this is the course for you!  But if you just want to learn a few phrases for travel, this course is more than you really want.

Tuesday, June 29, 2021 | 2:10-3:10pm

Series has started.  Registration is closed.

Tuesdays 2:10pm - 3:10pm

In this year long course we use McGraw Hill’s Spanish Conversation by Jean Yates in the series of “Practice Makes Perfect”.  The text serves as a guide for expanding your conversational fluency through the use of realistic everyday dialogues.  The exercises in the text will be complemented by handouts that include personal questions which make use of the expressions presented in each lesson.  During September and October we shall be reviewing the two key simple past tenses, the preterit and imperfect, which were introduced at the end of the Beginning Spanish course.  In this course the student’s knowledge of the basic structure of the language will be expanded to include complex sentences with dependent noun, adjective, and adverbial clauses which often require the use of the subjunctive mood.

We are meeting on line every week and cover about a lesson a month:  working with the exercises in the text, as well as with questions on handouts, plus taking some time for grammar review; the final exercise in the text entails writing a short paragraph using as many of the expressions presented in the lesson as possible.

Essential Tremor Support Group (Onsite)

Thursday, July 8, 2021 | 4:00-5:00pm

2nd Thursday of each month, 4:00pm-5:00pm

"We believe that our group members and our programs provide help and information about a condition that can be difficult and embarrassing,” says group leader John Watterson. Essential tremor is a neurological condition that causes shaking of the head, hands, and voice. An estimated 10 million people in the United States have essential tremor (ET). While not life-threatening, ET is a serious and progressive condition that can significantly affect a person’s quality of life—socially, professionally, and emotionally. People with ET often have difficulty with everyday activities such as getting dressed, eating, drinking, speaking or writing. Of 20-plus different kinds of tremor, essential tremor (ET) is the most common. Also known as familial tremor, benign essential tremor or hereditary tremor, ET is a neurological condition often confused with Parkinson’s disease and dystopia. Due to misguided beliefs and lack of awareness, many people with this condition never seek medical care though most would benefit from treatment. This group is both educational and supportive, and free. We meet on the second Thursday of each month, from 4:00-5:00pm.

International Essential Tremor Foundation (IETF) The IETF funds research to find the cause of essential tremor (ET) that leads to treatments and a cure, increases awareness, and provides educational materials, tools, and support for healthcare providers, the public, and those affected by ET. Monday, July 12, 2021 | 1:00-3:00pm

2nd Monday of each month, 1:00pm-3:00pm

Join a congenial group of artists who gather to practice their pastel painting skills. Each may bring a work in progress for a constructive group critique.

History

Noting the lack of a chalk pastel society in Virginia, in August 2001, Dick Carpenter invited Charlottesville regional artists in that media to meet at Michaels Arts and Crafts store at Barracks Road shopping center. Many were members of the Central Virginia Watercolor Guild, which had long admitted pastel as a water compatible “mixed” medium, but not as a feature of the CVWG activities. The result of the meeting was, quite purposefully, an “un-organization” with NO membership requirements, bylaws, officers, dues, agendas, minutes, quorum, name-tags, committees, etc. Just like-minded people enjoying meeting to exchange ideas and experiences about pastel materials and techniques, constructive criticism, and “show and tell.” The format is a mutual critique -- an examination, not fault-finding. Suggestions for overcoming problems are a part of critiquing. The choice of subject and style of a painting are not topics of critique. Some elements of Critique: 1. Overall Composition - Division of space. 2. Shapes and values 3. Form –shadows-placement of each of the elements 4. Perspective- Illusion of depth 5. Color harmony 6. Paths for the viewer’s eye 7. Center of interest - 8. Principles of Design. Assuring that there is a “message”. All attending artists are active producers, serious about their work, open to criticism, willing to present “work-in-progress," and constructive in their comments and suggestions. Although pastels are the featured media, other problem-paintings may be introduced.

Experience refreshing moments of calm, balance, and peace any time you want through meditation. As you relax, feel your stress melt away. Discover how meditation can improve your physical, mental, and emotional health.

Benefits of Meditation for the Body

By alleviating stress, meditation can improve your physical health. One of the physical benefits includes reducing the risk of stress-related illnesses.  Medical researchers and doctors have reported the effects that stress has on the body. A number of illnesses are the result of stress. For this reason, medical practitioners recommend meditation to their patients to reduce stress levels. This includes meditating to decrease your heart rate and blood pressure. They recommend meditation to enhance the body’s immune response. Hospitals and medical clinics even offer classes in meditation to patients.

Benefits of Meditation for the Mind

Meditation produces a deep state of relaxation and a calm mind, providing mental benefits.  Studies have shown the positive effects meditation has on the brain and on improving memory. It also enhances concentration, attention, and focus. Meditation can improve concentration, whether one needs to concentrate for sports, education, work, or hobbies. When focused, we can increase our effectiveness and productivity. Sports figures and champion athletes have reported that meditation helps them to improve their focus to prepare for competing in their sport at the highest level.

Benefits of Meditation for the Emotions

Your emotional wellness, too, can be enhanced through meditation, resulting in inner tranquility and joy. Through meditation, you can reduce anxiety and depression that are caused by feelings of hopelessness and disappointments in life. When these are the result of emotions, such as feeling isolated or lonely, or a sense of sadness from dealing with life’s losses, meditation can supplement the support received from professionals.

When you meditate, you tap in to a place of happiness and peace. This increases a sense of positivity.  You realize that, beyond your daily problems that cause emotional pain, there is a pool of joy within that you can access and feel more joyous.  Meditation helps you to recharge, refresh, and rejuvenate.  When you feel happier, you are calmer and more balanced. This creates a ripple effect that will radiate to others.

Gerry Gorman, recently retired engineer, engineering manager, and business development executive has been a student and practitioner of meditation for over 40 years. He describes a very practical form of meditation and explores how a meditation practice can help each of us develop a healthier perspective to fully appreciate life. He and his wife, Penny, have been married for 38 years and have two grown sons.
