Monday, May 1, 2023 | 7:30am - 12:00pm

Details:

Golf will return on Monday May, 1 2023!

The Spring kick-off golf meeting will be held on Monday, April 3 at 10 am at The Center.

This group is open to all senior golfers (men & women) from beginner to advanced levels playing at Meadowcreek Golf Course every Monday, May through October. We welcome folks who have just learned the game and want to learn more while having fun; however, this is not an “instructional” league. It is assumed that everyone knows the basics of golf as well as the etiquette and rules. We play Ready Golf, loosely organized into “Equally Capable Foursomes” and our tee times begin at 7:00 am. Walk, ride, play the back nine or go for the full eighteen! Come enjoy meeting new players or old friends while taking in the fresh air and the beautiful Virginia scenery. We try to match players of similar abilities, and no one takes the game too seriously. To speed up play and for the benefits of all players, please review the rules of Ready Golf before participating.  A $25 season fee applies, plus Meadowbrook green fees each week.  If you love the game of golf and would like to join like-minded folks, you are invited!  For more information, please contact Denny Berry, Senior Golf President,  dennymberry@gmail.com

Hiking-Monday (Offsite)

Hiking-Monday (Offsite)

Monday, June 5, 2023 | 9:00am-3:00pm

Mondays, 9:00am-3:00pm
We hike Mondays and Wednesdays all year long, in many different areas, including around Charlottesville, Shenandoah National Park, and along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The hikes can range in length from 5-10 miles with a total elevation gain from 500 to 2500 feet. Our hikes are rated from moderate to strenuous. This is based on the length of the hike, the amount of total elevation gain, and the terrain, which can often include steep ascents/ descents on rocky, uneven ground and stream crossings over slippery rocks. Our hikes are typically not not suited for beginner hikers.

Please dress appropriately for hiking in the mountains, including rain gear and hiking shoes or boots. Trekking poles are highly recommended and traction devices for boots may be necessary in winter. Bring lunch, snacks, 2-3 liters of water, a hat and wear layers. Bug spray and sunscreen are a must in summer. Hikes are smoke free, pets are not allowed, and we follow the “leave no trace” rule.

In this Post pandemic time we are still having sign ups for hikes. We take 14 hikers plus the leader on each hike. We hope that all participants are vaccinated. If not, we ask that you follow social distancing and mask requirements, We have a hiker email google group. The hike leaders send out emails about the hikes on Fridays at 5:00 pm for the Monday hikes, and Sundays at 5:00 pm for the Wednesday hikes. Sign up is on a first come, first serve basis. We do not carpool from The Center to the trailheads. Hikers are encouraged to set up carpools with other hikers if possible. The hike leader sends out the names of the hikers on each hike. We meet at the trailheads at 9:30 am and 9:00 am on Wednesdays from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Directions to the trailheads are included in the emails.

If you are hiking with us for the first time, please contact the hike leader directly, to discuss your hiking experience and to ensure your readiness and suitability for the hike. We want to ensure the safety of all our hikers. We encourage a spirit of camaraderie and welcome new hikers to try our group out. Since we are an associated program with The Center, hikers must be Center members in good standing.

Please keep in mind that there are inherent risks in hiking as in any vigorous activity. We always take care of each other, but ultimately you are responsible for your own safety.
If you would like to be put on our email list or have further questions please contact AnneColgate

This is based on the length of the hike, the amount of total elevation gain, and the terrain, which can often include steep ascents/ descents on rocky, uneven ground and stream crossings over slippery rocks. Our hikes are typically not suited for beginner hikers.

If not, we ask that you follow
social distancing and mask requirements, We have a hiker email google group. The hike leaders send out emails about the hikes on Fridays at 5:00 pm for the Monday hikes, and Sundays at 5:00 pm for the Wednesday hikes. Sign up is on a first come, first serve basis. We do not carpool from The Center to the trailheads. Hikers are encouraged to set up carpools with other
hikers if possible.

If you would like to be put on our email list or have further questions please contact Anne Colgate

Tai Chi Evenings

Tai Chi Evenings

Wednesday, June 7, 2023 | 5:30pm-6:30pm

Wednesdays 5:30-6:30

Taught by Bryan McKenzie. Also on Thursdays and Fridays 8:30-9:30am.

Stimulate your immune system, lower your blood pressure, decrease your stress and improve your balance: That’s not a bad scorecard for one hour’s worth of exercise each day.

A Center offering since 1994, instruction focuses more on gentle movement than individual postures, accommodates participants who may travel a lot or be away from class for extended periods of time and allows students to learn at their own pace.

The exercise helps participants rediscover their balance and slowly build muscle strength. Allowances are made for personal stamina, strength, medical history, and ability. The atmosphere is relaxed and participants running late for class are always welcome.

Health aspects of the exercise and its connection to Chinese medical theory, meditation techniques and self-defense techniques are often discussed. The class is based on the Three Emperors style of internal arts.

About the Exercise

The exercise is simple -- in a series of movements based on a Taoist martial art, participants slowly relearn how to balance, purposefully shifting weight from side to side and then increasing the difficulty of the movements. The slow movements not only redefine balance, but also provide a workout similar to the old Charles Atlas "dynamic tension" exercises for muscle development. Participants currently range in age from 50 to 94 and allowances are made for personal stamina, strength, medical history, and ability. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy-going; participants running late for class are welcome to join in whenever they arrive.

At Home with the Virginia Presidents (ACHS) - CANCELED

Wednesday, June 7, 2023 | 6:00pm-7:00pm

This event has been canceled.

"At Home with the Virginia Presidents” is an engaging armchair travel and history talk about the eight Virginia-born presidents and the sites that shaped their lives. We will travel the state--from Staunton to Charles City and Wytheville to Winchester--to (virtually) visit the homes and historic sites of the Virginia presidents. Attendees will learn a bit about the presidents’ lives, take a peek inside their homes and get ideas for their next history road trip. Heather S. Cole will be signing books after the presentation.

Heather S. Cole is a public historian and writer living in Staunton, Virginia. She has worked in a variety of museum and archives, including as an interpreter for the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum in Staunton. She currently works as an archivist for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Charlottesville, Virginia, and does freelance work organizing and digitizing family and corporate archives. A New England transplant, she previously ran the Mass. Memories Road Show, a state-wide public history and archives project documenting the people of Massachusetts cities and towns, and handled education and outreach for an historic house museum outside of Boston. This is her third book for The History Press -- Virginia’s Presidents: A History and Guide (The History Press, 2023) tells the stories of the Virginia Presidents and the historic sites that interpret their lives. It includes profiles of each of the eight Presidents and descriptions of the museums, historic sites and presidential homes in Virginia and surrounding states that tell their stories and, by extension, the story of our nation.

Essential Tremor Support Group

Essential Tremor Support Group

Thursday, June 8, 2023 | 4:00pm-5:00pm

Second Thursday of each month, 4:00–5:00 pm

May 11 - The speaker specializes in CBD products. She will discuss the potentials of CBD for those living with tremors.

June 8 - Betty Mooney will speak on the practice of mindfulness for managing tremors and pain

The meeting will take place in person at The Center

"We believe that our group members and our programs provide help and information about a condition that can be difficult and embarrassing,” says group leader John Watterson. Essential tremor is a neurological condition that causes shaking of the head, hands, and voice. An estimated 10 million people in the United States have essential tremor (ET). While not life-threatening, ET is a serious and progressive condition that can significantly affect a person’s quality of life—socially, professionally, and emotionally. People with ET often have difficulty with everyday activities such as getting dressed, eating, drinking, speaking or writing. Of 20-plus different kinds of tremor, essential tremor (ET) is the most common. Also known as familial tremor, benign essential tremor or hereditary tremor, ET is a neurological condition often confused with Parkinson’s disease and dystopia. Due to misguided beliefs and lack of awareness, many people with this condition never seek medical care though most would benefit from treatment. This group is both educational and supportive, and free. We meet on the second Thursday of each month, from 4:00-5:00pm.

International Essential Tremor Foundation (IETF) The IETF funds research to find the cause of essential tremor (ET) that leads to treatments and a cure, increases awareness, and provides educational materials, tools, and support for healthcare providers, the public, and those affected by ET. History

Noting the lack of a chalk pastel society in Virginia, in August 2001, Dick Carpenter invited Charlottesville regional artists in that media to meet at Michaels Arts and Crafts store at Barracks Road shopping center. Many were members of the Central Virginia Watercolor Guild, which had long admitted pastel as a water compatible “mixed” medium, but not as a feature of the CVWG activities. The result of the meeting was, quite purposefully, an “un-organization” with NO membership requirements, bylaws, officers, dues, agendas, minutes, quorum, name-tags, committees, etc. Just like-minded people enjoying meeting to exchange ideas and experiences about pastel materials and techniques, constructive criticism, and “show and tell.” The format is a mutual critique -- an examination, not fault-finding. Suggestions for overcoming problems are a part of critiquing. The choice of subject and style of a painting are not topics of critique. Some elements of Critique: 1. Overall Composition - Division of space. 2. Shapes and values 3. Form –shadows-placement of each of the elements 4. Perspective- Illusion of depth 5. Color harmony 6. Paths for the viewer’s eye 7. Center of interest - 8. Principles of Design. Assuring that there is a “message”. All attending artists are active producers, serious about their work, open to criticism, willing to present “work-in-progress," and constructive in their comments and suggestions. Although pastels are the featured media, other problem-paintings may be introduced.

Pride Book Event with Chris Glendenning

Pride Book Event with Chris Glendenning

Thursday, June 15, 2023 | 6:00pm-7:30pm

Join us for a presentation and book signing with Chris Glendenning. Searching for Gods That Deserve Us is a collection of three pivotal short stories written after the author's cousin Michael, a gay man, was murdered. In each story, Chris Glendenning imagined a world of happy endings for folks like Michael and herself. When she did this, she accepted the burden of being a writer: to help others “unlearn” and “re-envision” a world so lost in hatred.

Searching for Gods That Deserve Us is breathtaking. Glendenning seamlessly weaves together a love story expressed from amazingly different viewpoints and brings it into a tale that takes a man from the depths of despair to a tentative understanding of his homosexual son. She deftly encapsulates and challenges who and what God is to three people with intensely different backgrounds and experiences. This would be a perfect gift for someone struggling to understand a confession of same sex love and all the baggage that can go along with it. Glendenning absolutely nails it. -Jessie Chandler, Award-winning author of the Shay O’Hanlon Caper Series.

Monticello's Folk Traditions: Meet the Musicians of Early Music Access Project

Monticello's Folk Traditions: Meet the Musicians of Early Music Access Project

Saturday, June 17, 2023 | 10:30am-12:30pm

What sounds might a visitor to Monticello have heard? Music was often in the air - Thomas Jefferson was a violinist, and nearly every member of his family also played an instrument, including his three enslaved sons with Sally Hemings, all of whom played fiddle. On Charlottesville’s Main Street, the Scott family, related by marriage to the Hemings clan, boasted three generations of fiddlers who played for every sitting president for decades.

In celebration of Juneteenth, Early Music Access Project will present selections from Rock & Reel: Monticello’s Folk Traditions, a concert that explores the unique repertoire of these accomplished Black fiddlers, which ranged from raucous reels to stately minuets. This performance features Seattle-based fiddler Benjamin Hunter, baroque violinist and EMAP artistic director David McCormick, and Juilliard-trained baroque violinist Carmen Johnson-Pájaro. Dominic Giardino will play historical clarinets and Loren Ludwig will play early American bass viols. Learn more about the research behind this music in David McCormick’s 2022 article, Rock & Reel: Monticello’s Black Fiddlers.

The artists will talk about the history behind the music and discuss their approach to this unique fiddling tradition. Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions of the musicians. For more information about the full concert, slated to take place June 18 at The Rotunda, visit www.earlymusiccville.org.

Wednesday, July 5, 2023 | 3:00pm-4:30pm

The next 8 week session will be held July 5-August 9

Wednesdays, 3:004:30pm

We now live in a difficult world full of change and loss, much of which we can't control; and this can make us feel down, discouraged, and disconnected. We can learn to cope more successfully with these losses. If we can't change the world, we CAN change ourselves...how we think, what we do.

In this group, learn to and practice thinking positively; determine and practice what we, as individuals, can do to find worth, meaning and connection.
Each week, (and daily at home to get the most benefit) we will
                    1) think positive thoughts; acknowledge things we are grateful for and value
                    2) change ourselves:
--- ask what we want to be different, more meaningful, in our lives.
--- determine that this is achievable.
--- ask what is the first/next step we can take toward achieving it

There hadn't been anything like Mr. Rogers on television before and there hasn't been since.

Jazz Jam Session

Jazz Jam Session

Thursday, July 6, 2023 | 6:00pm-7:00pm

Meets the first Thursday of every month

A jazz jam session is a relatively informal musical event, in which musicians, including both instrumentalists and vocalists, who have not previously rehearsed their performance together, meet to play commonly known standard jazz tunes. The arrangements are created spontaneously by the musicians during performance. There is also a strong focus on individual improvised solos. Musicians may choose to participate in only one song or all songs during the evening.

The styles of jazz music performed during a single jam session can range widely – from early Dixieland jazz from the 1920’s, to big band swing of the 1930’s to 1940’s, popular Broadway tunes, Latin beats, Bebop and Cool jazz of the 1950’s to 1960’s and contemporary jazz from the 1970’s through to today. The jazz jam experience is a fun and educational experience for both participants and the audience. Participants get the chance to practice their jazz improvising skills in front of a live audience and meet other musicians in the local jazz community. Musicians of all abilities and ages from beginners to professionals are welcome to join in. The audience will likely hear some familiar jazz tunes but will also certainly discover new songs performed that they have not heard before.

Steve Brecker will head up this program. He has a music degree from University of Miami and has played jazz trumpet for 50+ years in a variety of music groups. He is a member of the Charlottesville based Sentimental Journey Big Band and the Charlottesville (Municipal) Band.

Free and open to all. Not a musician? Just come and listen!
